GLORY’s trip to Düsseldorf for its 69th event featured a main card match-up between Russian welterweight Dmitry Menshikov (23-2, 18 KO’s) and former title challenger Yoann Kongolo (66-11, 46 KO’s).
Kongolo landed his first three low kicks. Menshikov sat back and looked for openings with his hands. Kongolo found repeated success with kicking combinations. The pair traded right hands in boxing range.
Kongolo switched stances and delivered a flying knee. Menshikov sat in a defensive shell and gauged range. The Swiss fighter found openings for punching combinations late in the round as Menshikov could not settle into a rhythm.
A step-in knee from Kongolo landed early in round two. Menshikov powered forward and forced the fight to the ropes. Kongolo answered with a flying knee attempt. Menshikov backed Kongolo into the corner and looked for his lead hook.
The kicking output from Kongolo really frustrated the Russian fighter. Menshikov secured the clinch late in the round and delivered a series of knees.
A heavy shot put Kongolo down. He recovered, but another knee from Menshikov along the ropes opened a massive cut on the left eye of Kongolo. The doctor was called in and the fight was waved off.
The stoppage came with just one second left in the round, handing Menshikov his third straight win inside the GLORY ring.
“It was our gameplan to make him tired and then go to work,” said the Russian fighter.
