GLORY Fight of the Year 2017: Zhang vs. Kubo

  • News
  • Jan 31, 2018

GLORY fighters went to war in 2017. It was one of the most action-packed seasons we’ve ever had, with one amazing fight after another. Making a shortlist was difficult, but the final four nominees particularly stood out.   Competition was close between all four nominated fights and any one of them would have been a worthy winner. But there can only be one, and that honor goes to Chenglong Zhang and Masaya Kubo.   The two featherweights put on an astonishing display in the final of the GLORY 46 GUANGZHOU Featherweight Qualification Tournament, fighting at light-speed for all three rounds despite having already competed in semi-final bouts earlier in the evening.

The other nominees:   At GLORY 44 CHICAGO, Harut Grigorian and Karim Benmansour met in the semi-finals of the Welterweight Contender Tournament and threw everything but the kitchen sink at each other before Grigorian came away with the win.   Zakaria Zougarry and Yetkin Ozkul made their debuts at GLORY 41 HOLLAND and put on one of the most memorable displays of the year. It was a masterclass performance from both fighters, with Zougarry coming away with the decision win.   And finally, in December, the two biggest fighters on the roster met in the biggest fight of the year. Rico Verhoven and Jamal Ben Saddik staged a thriller at GLORY REDEMPTION, Verhoeven surviving a knockdown before coming back to stop Ben Saddik in the final minute of the fight.
