Spoiler: Shane Oblonsky vs. Thomas Adamandopoulos

  • Jun 5, 2015

Shane Oblonsky set the tone early in his featherweight (65kgs/145lbs) contest with French fighter Thomas Adamandopoulos. The young Californian let go a big overhand right in the first ten seconds which immediately woke the crowd up.

His cornerman Colin Oyama was not as impressed and kept calling for Oblosnky to calm down and throw combinations rather than the wild single shots he was trying to take Adamandopoulos out with. For his part the tricky Adamandopoulos was ducking under much of Oblosnky’s output and having a lot of success with his own low-kick counter, which possibly won him this round on the scorecards.

But by the end of the round it seemed that Oblosnky;s size and weight advantage was becoming a problem for Adamandopoulos, who found himself being forced backwards. Often he would duck into a clinch after throwing a strike of his own and this drew a warning from the referee in the second round after he caused a clash of heads.

Oblonsky was well in control by the third round and Adamandopoulos was becoming extremely defensive. After being dropped in the middle of the round and taking an eight count he ducked into another clinch and was docked a point by the referee. Shortly afterwards Oblonsky put him down for a second eight-count and sealed the deal. The fight went the distance, despite Oblonsky looking for the finish, and the Californian took a unanimous decision win.

“I have never fought someone with less fights than me, I love it. I love coming in and proving myself and fighting to the very end,” he said of the win over his more experienced and decorated opponent.

“What do I want next? The last fight I had was Gabriel Varga and he knows I want him. He has got the belt and I want that.”

Oblonksy def. Adamandopoulos, Unanimous Decision, Round 3 (29-24, 29-24, 28-25)
