A long-awaited rematch is now official for the co-main event of GLORY 55 NEW YORK next month as featherweight champion Robin "Poker Face" van Roosmalen (40-7, 21 KO’s) meets Thai contender Petchpanomrung (159-36-2, 27 KO’s) for a second time.
The two first met at GLORY 41 HOLLAND in Van Roosmalen’s home city of Den Bosch, Netherlands and the champion came away with a Majority Decision which sparked a lot of intense conversation among fans.
Petchpanomrung’s team claimed Van Roosmalen only won a decision because he was on home soil. Since then he’s scored three wins, two by stoppage, to put himself back into contention.
Roosmalen was furious with the decision himself, but only because he felt he had been the clear winner. He’s defended his title twice since then, both times by way of clear unanimous decisions.
One of the most dominant fighters in the sport, former lightweight champion Van Roosmalen stands to become the most successful featherweight champion in GLORY history if he wins, extending his run of featherweight championship victories to five.
He would also tie with heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven for Most Victories in GLORY Title Fights (Verhoeven has eight title fight victories).
Perhaps worth noting is that Van Roosmalen’s only title fight loss in GLORY was when he lost the lightweight title to Sitthichai back at GLORY 35.
Why might that be relevant? Because one thing Petchpanomrung and Sitthichai have in common is that they are both southpaw Muay Thai stylists from Thailand.
GLORY 55 NEW YORK takes place at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 20.
It will air live in the USA on ESPN NEWS from 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT and will re-air Sunday, July 22 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on ESPN 2.
