Jason Wilnis' victory in the main event of the GLORY 33 SUPERFIGHT SERIES card on Friday night won him the world middleweight championship.
His stoppage of former champion Simon 'The One' Marcus in the third round of their contest has also been rewarded with a fight night bonus. Wilnis receives $5,000 for the 'Knockout of the Night'.
The fight had been preceded by hard talk from both sides and both fighters felt there was an isssue to be settled between them. Things heated up in the first round and the action was constant until the finish.
It was a dominant performance from Wilnis. He considers his hands to be his best weapon and they won him the fight, rocking Marcus late in the second and finishing him in the third by way of multiple knockdowns.
It was a bad night for Marcus but a good night for his friend and fellow Toronto, Canada fighter Matt 'Matics' Embree, who stormed to victory in the Featherweight Contender Tournament live on ESPN 2.
Embree was making his GLORY debut in the tournament and faced South Korean veteran Chibin Lim in the semi-finals. He stopped Lim with two knockdowns in the second round and then proceeded to the final, where he did the same to Giga Chikadze to win the tournament.
The win puts Embree in line for a title shot, most likely against the winner of the upcoming featherweight title fight between champion Gabriel Varga of Canada and his challenger Robin van Roosmalen, the former lightweight champion.
That fight is set to take place at GLORY 34 DENVER on October 21. In the meantime, Embree also receives $5,000 for his 'Fighter of the Night' performance on Friday. All in all – two KO wins, a title shot and a cash bonus – it's an impressive haul for the GLORY newcomer.
