Thomas and Thompson to clash in key career bout in Chicago

  • News
  • Aug 15, 2017

Two of the gamest middleweights in North America will collide in the GLORY 44 CHICAGO meeting between Warren "Destroyer" Thompson (14-8-1, 3 KO’s) and Robert "The White Dragon" Thomas (8-5, 5 KO’s).   Thompson, fighting out of Atlanta, USA, and Thomas, fighting out of Ontario, Canada, share similar histories in GLORY, having both made a habit of taking on anyone, at any time.   Thomas had probably the hardest debut any fighter has ever had for GLORY, stepping in on short notice to face Artem ‘The Lion’ Levin in the fight before the Russian won the GLORY world middleweight title and losing a unanimous decision.   Two fights later, Thomas - still in the process of transitioning from Muay Thai rules to kickboxing - found himself matched with then-#1 contender Joe Schilling. He gave a good account of himself but against lost a decision.   On the other side of this fight is Thompson, whose GLORY record is littered with short-notice fights - and light-heavyweight ones at that.    A stoppage loss to Zinedine Hameur-Lain at GLORY 32 finally prompted a drop to middleweight, where he met with immediate success via a win over Mike Lemaire.   Ahead of their Chicago meeting, both fighters have talked about having overhauled their training regimens in 2017 and reconstructing their style. The two are both originally Muay Thai stylists who have transitioned into kickboxing and have had to make adjustments as a result.   Thomas is now training under former welterweight world champion ‘Bazooka’ Joe Valtellini in Toronto, Canada, while Thompson trains at Meijiro Atlanta, an affiliate of Amsterdam’s legendary Meijiro Gym.   Reconstructed and reloaded, both fighters are looking to sink their jaws deep into the middleweight division this year. The personal and professional stakes are high; both have put everything into their training camps and defeat is unthinkable.   Rarely have two fighters stepped into the GLORY ring with as much as hunger as Thomas and Thompson will. This promises to be a dogfight, with both looking to impose themselves on the fight and dominate their opponent.   GLORY 44 SuperFight Series streams live and exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Friday, Aug. 25.
