Action, excitement, controversy - Josh Jauncey’s third GLORY outing had ...

The 21-year-old Canadian impressed everyone in his first two GLORY appearances, debuting with a win over the veteran Warren Stevelmans and then taking out the experienced Jae Gil Noh of South Korea in his second outing.

In this outing he faced Max Baumert of Germany, a professional boxer and kickboxer with very dangerous hands. Trained in the classic European style, Baumert is a fighter who likes to come forward against opponents.

That suited Jauncey fine. He stood his ground and let Baumert come at him. The result was constant fast and furious exchanges. Jauncey continually beat Baumert to the punch or would interrupt his combinations with a well-placed punch or knee, then unload his own combination, then circle out.

By the end of round one Jauncey was in his groove and Baumert, tough and relentless though he is, was getting frustrated and struggling to find an answer to the problems he was being posed. Then, right at the end of the round, a moment of high drama: one of Baumert’s bombs broke through, rocked Jauncey and opened his guard up.

The follow-on punches landed clean and Jauncey staggered towards the ropes. The bell rang to end the round but Baumert was still throwing and a punch towards the rear of Jauncey’s head put him down. He jumped up immediately, with his corner protesting that the shot had been both late and to the back of the head. But the referee deemed it a knockdown and made him take a count. Only then was the round officially over.

Suddenly things were wide open. Jauncey had clearly won the first round and was on track to win the second but had suddenly been handed a 10-8 down to deal with. That meant that even to get a draw he would have to win the third round. Something had to happen.

Happen it did; Jauncey’s corner had given him a plan to use and he went out looking for it right away. Baumert pressed forwards throwing hands and Jauncey hit him in the face with a high right knee. It opened a huge cut over Baumert’s eye, so big that Jauncey backed off and motioned to the referee - stood behind Baumert - to take a look.

The doctor inspected the cut; it was a bad one. A huge gash was open over the eye and blood was pouring out, obscuring Baumert’s vision. The doctor determined that the fight could not continue and it was duly waved off, securing Jauncey a perfect 3-0 record in GLORY.

“My corner said if I didn’t win round three I wouldn’t even get a draw. So they told me to go for the knee, my brother said it was there and it was, I threw it and that is what cut him,” he said afterwards.

“He can’t fight with a flap of skin over his eye because I am going to keep punching it, so it was good thing they stopped it!”

Jauncey def. Baumert, Doctor stoppage, TKO R3 0:37
